Stair rail as design opportunity

After taking care of the code requirements for basic safety, go ahead and use the stair rails as a canvas for design. In the projects below, Boulder architect Juana Gómez creates unique pieces for each house.

 

Above, a stair rail becomes a focal point by varying the widths, spacing, and direction of the clear alder parts.

Left and right above, antique iron fragments were painted black to match steel rods and post bases. Together with walnut newels the metal parts form an elegant accent to these steps.

Variations of spacing and direction of 1×1 powder-coated steel parts create interest in the exterior rail pictured below.

In another interior stair, rectangular frames applied to these balusters mimic the proportions of the red birch cabinet doors below for a custom look.
